PAX Pacts a Wallop

Up and down the Eastern Seaboard Winter Storm PAX has created havoc.

Not at Stratton Mountain Vermont though.  The precipitation that has caused power outages and traffic tie-ups from Georgia to Maine has many in Vermont areas seeing green from the white.

Those who were lucky enough to get to resorts ahead of the storm, and there were many of them, are being treated to some of the best snow of the season, perhaps the best in several seasons.

And it’s just in time for the President’s Day weekend and the week that follows.

Many patrons interviewed said they looked at the forecast on Tuesday and made plans.   For many that meant taking their kids out of school.  There were families all over the mountain taking advantage of the powder.  It was a smart thing to do because most schools were closed Thursday and Friday.  The academic rigor in the midst of the storm and leading up to a vacation week was probably just not there.

Families were not the only ones taking advantage of the dump from PAX.  Several other patrons said they called into work and got out ahead of the storm.  A couple of riders from Manhattan said they left Wednesday night arriving at Stratton at 2:00 AM so they could be on the lifts when they opened on Thursday.

The great skiing and riding day on Thursday led to a quite a bustle in the shops and restaurants at Stratton.  The wait at the Fire Tower was said to be two hours at the height of the dinner hour.  The wait at Mulligan’s was much less and the trick seemed to be go later around 7:30 PM.  The buzz at Mulligans was all about the day everyone just had and what they were looking forward to Friday.

There was up to a foot of luscious powder on the ground by the end the day on Thursday and it was still dumping on Friday morning. Conditions only got better during the day overnight another foot came down.

Storms like PAX only come too infrequently in Northeast, at least for those who love to be outside.  Being in the right place at the right time is something to embrace.
